Broken spring?
Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is Broken
- A loud bang from the garage, like a gunshot
- A visible gap in the spring above the door
- Opener hums but the door stays shut
- Door lifts a few inches, then stops
- Door feels extremely heavy by hand
- Door rises crooked or slams shut
Torsion Springs vs. Extension Springs
01
Torsion springs
Mounted on a steel shaft above the door, they twist to lift it. Smooth and quiet, and standard on most newer homes. Many double doors use two.
02
Extension springs
Mounted along the horizontal tracks, they stretch as the door closes. Common on older and single-car doors, and they must have safety cables through them.
Ask about high-cycle springs if your family uses the garage as the main entrance. They cost a little more and last far longer.
Why Springs Break, and Why We Replace Them in Pairs
Every spring is rated for a set number of open-close cycles, often around 10,000. A busy household can use that up in seven to ten years. When one of a matched pair breaks, the other is close behind, so replacing both saves you a second service call and keeps the door balanced.
We size springs by weighing and measuring your door, not by guessing, then set the tension so the door holds itself halfway up. That is what keeps your opener from wearing out early.

Spring Repair FAQs
Look above the closed door. A broken torsion spring shows a visible gap a few inches wide. Other signs are a loud bang, a door that suddenly feels very heavy and an opener that hums but cannot lift the door.
It is not safe. The door can weigh 150 to 300 pounds and the opener is not built to lift it alone. Call us and we will get the car out safely.
Usually under an hour and a half, including balancing and testing.
Yes, on doors with two springs. They wear at the same rate, so the second one usually fails soon after the first.
Field crews run 24 hours Sunday through Thursday and until 2 PM on Friday. There is no field service on Saturday, but you can still call to book.
